Postponed and Re-Imagined

Join the Augustinians on April 24, 2020!

Given the present, challenging conditions in which we in the United States and people all around the world are living as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, we think it inappropriate for us to continue Tolle Lege Day in the way we first conceived it.

However, we do think it fitting that we gather together - virtually - friars, families, friends, colleagues, and benefactors, united in mind and heart and inspired by love of neighbor and our Augustinian charism and ideals, to express our friendship, prayers, hopes, and good wishes. We are not asking for your economic, but for your spiritual support.

We invite you, then, on the days leading up to Tolle Lege Day, Friday, April 24th, to join together spiritually by prayer for one another, for our country and for people around the world who are experiencing the effects of this difficult trial, most particularly the sick and those who have died. Let us experience the power of united prayer both to sustain us in this crisis and to plead for its end. We invite you to send us your petitions, your words of encouragement, and your reflections.

On Friday, April 24th you are invited to join us for a live-streamed Tolle Lege Day Mass, celebrating the Conversion of Saint Augustine in which all the intentions gathered will be remembered. Please consider inviting family and friends to join us for Mass. All are welcome. May God bless you and keep you safe and healthy.

Praying for other people has always been the hallmark of Christian life.
Saint Augustine writes: “Prayer is the cry of the heart.”
Remembering at prayer is a beautiful Catholic practice.
When we recall a person in our prayer, the individual becomes present to us.

We remember, we celebrate, we believe.

Postponed FAQs

Is Tolle Lege Day postponed?

Tolle Lege Day as a day of giving is postponed until further notice. We invite you to participate in a re-imagined Tolle Lege Day where we ask for your spiritual support, not your financial support.

What does a re-imagined Tolle Lege Day look like?

In the days leading up to April 24th and on that day, we will come together in one mind and heart as an Augustinian community in prayer for each other, our country and people around the world who experience the effects of this pandemic.

How can I participate?

You can offer your petitions and prayer intentions here or via a link on the Tolle Lege Day home page.

Will there still be a Celebration of Mass on Saturday, April 25, 2020?

No, not on Saturday, however, we will live-stream a Mass of Remembrance on Tolle Lege Day, Friday, April 24th, the feast of the Conversion of Saint Augustine, where all of your petitions and prayer intentions will be remembered. Mass will be celebrated by Prior Provincial Fr. Michael F. Di Gregorio, O.S.A. A link to the live-streamed Mass will be provided on the Tolle Lege Day home page.

Is there a new date for Tolle Lege Day as a day of giving?

We are unable to set a definitive date at this time, but we hope to reschedule in the not too distant future. We will be in touch as soon as that decision is made. Our plan after a rescheduled Tolle Lege Day would be to resume our next giving day on April 24, 2021, the feast of the Conversion of St. Augustine.

I already made a gift. What happens now?

The Augustinians are most grateful for your generosity. When Tolle Lege Day as a giving day does take place this calendar year, we will count you as one of our early supporters. However, if you would like a refund, please email Meghan Martin at meghan.martin@augustinian.org so that we may assist you.

Should I hold onto the Tolle Lege Day printed brochure and response card that I received in the mail?

Yes, you will be able to use the gift card and return envelope once we have scheduled a new giving day date.

I thought this was mostly an online initiative—if so, why are we postponing?

As an Augustinian community, it doesn’t feel appropriate to host a day of giving when people worldwide are suffering. We are concerned about those who are sick, those on the front lines who care for the sick and many who have lost their jobs and experience hardship. We want to pause and pray for those in need of our prayers. We look forward to a time when we can roll out Tolle Lege Day as originally planned to celebrate the Augustinian charism and all those who share in it with us.

Where can I learn more about the Augustinians and find ways to engage in their charism and mission?
