“I was lucky. I was twice blessed from the good Lord above with the support, affirmation and friendship of the Augustinian community and the Villanova community, enabling me to truly live the ‘Life of Riley.’”
-Fr. George Riley, O.S.A., in a 2017 interview with The Villanovan
As a Villanova faculty member and administrator, he is beloved by all who know him and is held in high esteem by countless Villanova Alumni. His smile is infectious, his sense of humor is unique and to say he is one of a kind would be an understatement. He had a robust life outside of Villanova in his weekend ministry at the Jersey Shore where he would celebrate Mass for hundreds of vacationers who would flock to church to hear his homilies and his art of Irish storytelling. Today, Fr. Riley lives on the second floor of the monastery in the skilled nursing unit where he and other friars had been in quarantine for a full year since March 2020. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease a few years ago, Fr. Riley is well cared for by an outstanding nursing staff in a caring community with his Augustinian brothers. His life has come full circle as he resides on the campus of the University that he loves so much and that loves him in return.
